Third grade math teacher Kathy Kendrick is new to University View Academy and to the online environment but not new to her lifelong vocation of teaching. Even as a youngster, she says she always wanted to be a teacher. So, it was easy to be coaxed out of retirement after 25 years in brick and mortar schools.
Kendrick says math was always easy for her and she already had experience teaching Eureka, so it became a good fit with Uview. She earned her BS from Southeastern Louisiana University and started blending the pace of teaching and parenthood, raising four children. Ms. Kendrick admits it was a busy time since three of her boys played travel baseball and it made for a hectic pace. Two of her sons went on to play college baseball and the third was drafted out of high school by the Minnesota Twins organization. She says she can identify with Uview families whose lives have a lot of moving parts. “You put on the hat and do what you do”, when asked about juggling a job, school and parenting.
Ms. Kendrick started with Uview in September when some friends, also Uview teachers, persuaded her to apply for an opening at the school. She says she was struck by the “…welcoming nature, people that are so caring and helpful and make you feel appreciated for the teaching work you do. Very positive atmosphere.”
She says she looks forward to school every morning, just like she did when she was a child. And she can do what she loves, teach.
