The Learning Coach Role

A Learning Coach is an adult who oversees the day-to-day learning activities of the student in the learning environment, wherever that is — at home, at the parent’s workplace, etc. Every student should have a Learning Coach to monitor and encourage the student and to ensure the student is engaged in school at the expected level.

Parents and guardians are automatically assigned as Learning Coaches. However, a parent or guardian can designate another adult to function as the Learning Coach. Designating a Learning Coach does not remove the parent or guardian from the role. However, a Designated Learning Coach can function as the student’s primary Learning Coach if that works best for the family.

UVA’s Family Liaison department provides year-round guidance and support to our Learning Coaches. They facilitate orientation and training of UVA’s new Learning Coaches and students.

General Information

  • How much time is invested each day?

    • The time required by the student varies daily depending on the student’s age and ability to work independently. Students who cannot work independently or those with attention deficits, learning differences, or behavioral concerns require more Learning Coach time and support.
    • Young students (K-2) and students who require assistance should have a Learning Coach present in the learning environment to ensure the student remains focused, to provide hands-on support that reinforces skills, to assist when contacting the teacher for help, and to provide guidance and support that keeps the student engaged in school during designated school hours.
    • Learning Coaches of older students who do not require significant oversight throughout the day can perform some of their responsibilities remotely if they commit to using the available monitoring tools and resources when the student is learning.
  • What is my role as Learning Coach?

    • The Learning Coach is the facilitator, not the teacher. You will:
      • Communicate with teachers and school staff.
      • Maintain the learning space and supplies.
      • Refer to the Canvas schedule and discuss daily lesson requirements and other activity commitments with the student to create a weekly plan.
      • Oversee daily lesson completion, and monitor student comprehension of lesson content and the student’s engagement in school.
      • Ensure lessons are complete with the appropriate level of time and effort.
      • Monitor progress and grades.
  • What type of support will we receive from the school?

UVA has a full-time department that provides year-round guidance and support for our Learning Coaches. This department facilitates the orientation and training of UVA’s new Learning Coaches and students. In addition, they provide several resources that offer 24/7 real-time support.

  • Are there opportunities for social interaction?

Yes. University View Academy has school-sponsored events in several regions of the state. A field trip of educational and social significance is scheduled monthly in each region.

  • Is there a graduation ceremony?

Absolutely! UVA’s graduation ceremony is a traditional event – complete with cap and gown, pomp and circumstance, family, and friends.

  • How much does the school cost?

    UVA is tuition free.

  • Both of us have to work. Will our kids be successful?

    • This program works best with a Learning Coach at home to oversee and monitor a student’s progress. However, a parent or guardian can designate another adult as the Learning Coach.
    • Designating a Learning Coach does not remove the parent or guardian from the role. However, a Designated Learning Coach (DLC) can function as the student’s primary Learning Coach if that works best for the family.
  • What is the school grade or performance score?

The University View Academy grade provided by the Louisiana Department of Education is a C. Our goal is to be an A-rated school, and we are continuously working to reach that score.

  • Do students qualify for TOPS and other scholarships?

Yes. Counselors can provide students with multiple scholarship opportunities, both in-state and out-of-state. In 2023, over $3.5 million was earned by the graduating class in scholarship offers.
