The first-ever Industry Day for University View Academy was held October 24 as 8th through 12th graders visited five locations to learn about career options available in manufacturing. The goal was to introduce students to pathways that could lead to jobs in engineering, skilled crafts, management, clerical, high tech and others. The five industrial sites included BASF Manufacturing in Geismar, Calumet Specialty Products in Shreveport, Dow Amerchol in Greensburg, Oxbow Calcining in Baton Rouge and Shell Refining in Convent. University View Academy partnered with the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, which hopes to grow the number of host sites Uview and other schools can visit. The students and their parents saw presentations, had tours and got up-close and personal advice from workers at the sites as they examined future career paths.
