University View Academy’s (UVA) guiding theme for the 2024-25 school year has been “Changing the Game: Imagine. Innovate. Inspire.” In keeping with this theme, UVA staff members recently joined together with families at the Crowne Plaza Executive Center in Baton Rouge to hold an inaugural new student orientation.
The orientation was planned and executed to provide new families a smooth transition to the virtual learning environment at UVA this semester. Families who enrolled late in the fall were also encouraged to attend to help address any remaining questions or concerns.
“The mid-year enrollees are entering a completely new environment,” said Deputy Superintendent Lekisha Chambers. “We wanted them to have an opportunity to hear from us, to become familiar with our systems and platforms, and to know who to reach out to for help.”
UVA’s principals, events team, family liaison team, and more were on hand to interact with families, answer questions, and share with them UVA’s various opportunities for engagement and academic enrichment. Attendees could pick up UVA t-shirts and yard signs, as well as free learning resources provided by the instructional materials team. The orientation also provided new families the chance to meet peers in the same grade level or from the same region. Families who could not attend in person could stream the session virtually, giving them the opportunity to follow along with the presentations and ask questions.
UVA strives to place families first in every decision made. All new enrollees complete an onboarding course and receive assistance from teachers and the family liaison team as needed. These supports are available throughout the school year, but the orientation was designed to answer more commonly asked questions early to ease the transition for all students and learning coaches.
