A woman gestures toward a dinosaur-filled landscape; Meche’s art beautifully celebrates nature and creativity.

University View Academy senior Amelie Meche’s artwork, titled The Country of Westrine, has been selected to be featured by Celebrating Art. Meche produced the piece for UVA’s annual student art expo in April.

“This painting has a particular theme of discovery in nature,” Meche said of the piece. “It’s a colorful and bright painting, reflecting the joy of discovery by the people of the Westrine. One of the men points to magical amphibians, while the other gazes upon their beauty.”

Meche, a second-year student at UVA, enjoys art because it provides her with a medium to tell the stories that she dreams about. Drawing inspiration from “Lord of the Rings” and “Dune”, Meche developed the fictional country of Westrine from the time she was a kid.

Her inspiration for the piece? “The Native Americans and their love and reverence for the bison of America in particular,” Meche noted. Her favorite part of the piece? “The color palette.”

A member of UVA’s Early College & Career Academy, Meche is excited for her final year of high school. During her short time as a student at UVA, she says she enjoys the teachers and field trips the most.

“I want to end my final year of high school strong,” she said. “I’m taking on several dual enrollment and honors classes. I hope to achieve good grades and have college credits by the end of the year.”

One other date she’s looking forward to? Friday, May 28, 2027. The day she and her fellow seniors will represent the Class of 2027 and walk across the stage at the Raising Cane’s River Center.
