Boosting Student Confidence Ahead of Louisiana State Testing
University View Academy hosted Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) prep sessions for UVA students in grades 3-8 at the Lynx Den STEAM Center in April ahead of the May 4-8 state testing period.
Students took part in engaging, hands-on workshops led by teachers that prepared them for what they will be tested on. The prep sessions were split into subjects with two-hour sessions for math, science, and social studies. The sessions offered a chance for students to work through problems and experiments, and to ask questions about what they might see on LEAP tests.
The math session featured topics such as surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes, ratios, and expressions. Social studies featured document analysis, vocabulary review games, and a writing workshop. Science had multiple stations set up that discussed force and motion, magnet systems, phase changes, chemical reactions, tectonics, and more.
“The teachers gave me a lot of support and motivation to try my best,” UVA 8th grader, Justin L., said of the events. “I also enjoyed being with my classmates because we were able to help each other.”
LEAP testing takes place every spring in Louisiana. UVA uses these LEAP prep sessions to build students’ confidence and reduce testing anxiety. They also serve as an avenue to reinforce the knowledge and skills that students have already learned throughout the school year.
