More than 100 students in the six-parish area have chosen to switch from traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms and instead are seeking an education online.

And that number is continuing to increase, said Mandy LaCerte.

LaCerte, director of early college and workforce development, said 107 Southwest Louisiana students are enrolled in University View Academy, a public K-12 online charter school.

Founded in 2011 and originally called Louisiana Connections Academy, the school is authorized by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and is tuition-free.

LaCerte said the school’s mission is to give high school students, regardless of ZIP code, access to advanced opportunities like dual enrollment and advanced placement courses.
