Faculty and staff from University View Academy (UVA) traveled to the Alexandria Convention Center on Friday, September 13, to meet students and families at UVA’s open house hosted each fall for students in north Louisiana. As a virtual school, UVA’s open house is a special time for students to meet and interact with teachers and peers.
“Open house is a great opportunity to allow the UVA community to come together,” said high school world history teacher Todd McElroy. “It shows students and parents they are part of something bigger.” To ensure that everyone could enjoy the benefits of the open house, McElroy live streamed highlights of the day to students who had to attend virtually.
Despite Hurricane Francine’s Louisiana landfall earlier in the week, staff and educators put on their best efforts to maximize the engagement time with the 380 individuals in attendance. “Open house was a welcome release from all the worry and anxiety regarding Hurricane Francine,” said elementary school principal Christol Williams. “I appreciated all the teachers who could make the event and welcome families, not only for themselves but for teachers impacted by the storm who couldn’t. Seeing the eager faces of the parents and students as they engaged with our staff was refreshing.”
Families in attendance could explore UVA’s various classes and programs, the Scholastic Book Fair, and the fun activities teachers and staff set up at their tables. Members of UVA’s quiz bowl team enjoyed the in-person practice time while both families and staff were riveted by the inaugural Nintendo Super Smash Bros. tournament hosted by UVA’s esports club. As part of its mission to engage its community of scholars, UVA hosts several in-person events around the state throughout the school year.
