It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of longtime Foundation for Louisiana Students Board Member Michael w. Howes. A deeply kind, thoughtful, and talented man, Howes leaves behind a legacy of art, education, and unwavering integrity to University View Academy (UVA).

An Artistic Legacy
A native and resident of Baton Rouge, Howes was a pillar of the local arts community. He had been an Artist Member of the Baton Rouge Gallery (BRG) since 1995. He received his B.F.A. from Louisiana State University and his M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Alabama. His profound concern for the changing culture, vanishing coastline, and endangered wetlands of south Louisiana was evident in his work. These themes resonated with audiences far beyond the Gulf Coast. His sculptures were exhibited in juried and invitational shows throughout the United States and internationally, shown in various cities such as New York City, London, Beijing, Florence, and Princeton.

A Life of Service and Education
His impact extended well beyond the gallery walls. He spent three decades as an educator across multiple Louisiana universities, shaping the minds of the next generation of artists.

He was also a dedicated servant leader. Serving on the Foundation for Louisiana Students Board since 2014 and as Board Secretary for the last two years, Howes was known as a man of action. He was the driving force behind the organization’s solar project—an initiative he championed from the very beginning—and was deeply concerned with preserving green spaces.

Colleagues remember him as a man of his word. If Howes said he was going to do something, he did it, and he did it well. Even in moments of disagreement, his commitment to the organization and the cause never wavered. As one colleague fondly remembered, “He was what I call my in-house hippie,” a testament to his unique spirit and creative soul.

A Well-Deserved Rest
Despite a difficult year involving illness and the loss of his wife, his creative spark never dimmed. Even recently, while in care facilities, he was found drawing proving he was an artist until the very end. Before his passing, he donated a piece of his art (pictured below) to remain on display at UVA.

He loved his school, he loved his community, and he loved his craft. Howes earned a peaceful rest, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the pleasure to know him. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Howes will be missed terribly, but his art and his contributions to our school community will not be forgotten.
