University View Academy’s (UVA) Teacher of the Year spotlight series concludes with the 2024-25 Elementary School Teacher of the Year, Ms. Roxanna D’Angelo. D’Angelo teaches fifth grade science and has been in education for 23 years. She has been with UVA for 13 years, almost from the school’s inception.
“What brought me to UVA was the concept of virtual teaching, and meeting kids’ needs where they are,” D’Angelo said. “I get to see their personalities at home. When they’re at a regular brick and mortar school, their personalities can be different from when they’re at home and comfortable.”
D’Angelo makes it her mission to nurture excellence in students. She takes an organized, data-driven approach to her classes and is always willing to adjust her assignments and teaching methods to ensure her students flourish. Last school year, she expanded UVA’s Beta Club offerings to include the elementary school level. National Beta Club is a nationwide educational youth organization that promotes academic achievement, character, leadership, and service. D’Angelo currently serves as co-sponsor for UVA’s elementary chapter.
In addition to the success of her students, D’Angelo is also dedicated to serving her peers. “The elementary department is one big family,” she shared. “We’ve grown over the years, and we work great together.”
D’Angelo’s long history with UVA makes her an ideal teaching model for her colleagues. She is the current science teacher leader for elementary school and works with all elementary science teachers to address concerns and provide teaching resources. D’Angelo’s peers nominated her for the Teacher of the Year award in recognition of her expertise and servant leadership.
“Ms. D’Angelo is a supportive, knowledgeable, caring, and dedicated educator,” said elementary school principal Christol Williams. “Not only does she take care of her family and students daily, but she also takes care of her coworkers and other UVA staff. It’s not uncommon to come across a message in the team chat where a staff member thanks Roxanna for whatever positive impact she shared.”
The Teacher of the Year award program is sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE). As UVA’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year, D’Angelo advances to the next stage of the competition towards the state-level Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Ms. D’Angelo on her achievement.
